Undergraduates choose to major in speech communication because they enjoy studying human interaction and because their studies will enhance their lives and careers.
The curriculum includes skills-oriented courses such as interviewing, debating, and public speaking as well as theory-based courses on nonverbal communication, persuasion, gender, humor, and deception. Students can also take courses that examine communication in legal, political, and organizational contexts.
Graduates have been employed by such companies as Wells Fargo, ING Financials, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Marriott Corporation, AT&T, Southern Company, and Sysco. Some have been entrepreneurs that have built vibrant businesses. Students have entered advanced degrees programs in law, religion, college student personnel, and communication at such institutions as Duke University, Florida State University, Purdue University, Texas A & M, University of Georgia, University of Kentucky, University of Northern Arizona, University of Texas as well as at Southern Miss. Our graduates have had successful careers that have led to positions as Vice President of Louis Vuitton, Chief Executive Officer of the Godwin Group, and Provost of the University of Illinois.
